Tailwheel Takeoff — Normal and Crosswind
Raise the tail smoothly to the takeoff attitude, hold the centerline with rudder through the gyroscopic yaw, and fly the crosswind correction from the first foot of the roll.
Setup
- Flaps set — lowered before takeoff only if the manufacturer recommends it
- Wind assessed: headwind and crosswind components, gust spread, and whether to hold it on longer“Wind check”In strong, gusty winds it is advisable to add an extra margin of speed before allowing the airplane to leave the ground — a liftoff at normal takeoff speed can leave you without positive control, or stalled, when a lull arrives.
- Line up on the centerline; tailwheel straight and centered — locked if the airplane has a lock“Tailwheel centered”
- Aileron fully into the wind; feet on the rudder pedals, heels on the floor, off the brakesThe wings are already making lift. Upwind aileron kills lift on that side and keeps the upwind wing from rising before you have airspeed.
Execution
- Release the brakes and advance the throttle smoothly and continuously to takeoff power“Power set”Carefully avoid any brake pressure during the takeoff roll.
- After a brief acceleration, apply positive forward elevator to smoothly lift the tail“Tail coming up”Target the pitch attitude that improves forward visibility and gives a smooth transition into climbing flight as the airplane keeps accelerating — not the lowest attitude you can hold.
- Expect left yaw as the tail rises — lead it with right rudder“Right rudder”Nose-down pitch movement produces left yaw through gyroscopic precession of the propeller. The force is proportional to how fast the propeller axis is tilted, so raise the tail smoothly rather than abruptly.
- Hold a constant pitch attitude by gradually reducing forward elevator as speed buildsElevator authority keeps increasing and will keep pitching the nose down if you leave the input in. This is active flying — the airplane starts to fly long before it leaves the runway.
- Centerline held with smooth, prompt, positive rudder corrections“Centerline”Vigorous rudder is fine when it is needed. What hurts a tailwheel is rudder held too long after the correction has taken effect.
- Crosswind: hold upwind aileron and roll on the upwind main wheel; rudder prevents weathervaningBecause the wings are making lift during the roll, strong upwind aileron banks the airplane into the wind and gives positive crosswind correction early. The remainder of the roll is made on the upwind main wheel with the longitudinal axis aligned with the runway.
- Crosswind: as speed builds, smoothly decrease pitch attitude and adjust aileron and rudder to keep the correction rightA pitch attitude that stays excessively steep — or goes too flat — makes crosswind control during the ground roll harder.
- Liftoff comes on its own at the held attitude — no rotation input“Flying”With the correct attitude maintained, AOA and airspeed combine to produce lift without a separate rotation. Only minimum pitch adjustment is then needed to reach climb speed.
Recovery
- Airborne: maintain straight flight and hold the proper pitch attitude
- Crosswind: level the wings as you establish an appropriate drift correction (crab)“Crab established”
- Accelerate to {n:climbSpeed} KIAS and trim; flaps per POH if used
- Gusty conditions: hold it on longer for extra speed, then make a smooth, positive rotation
ACS tolerances
- Centerline maintained throughout the takeoff roll
- Tail raised smoothly to a constant pitch attitude and held there
- Crosswind correction established before liftoff — upwind wing down, axis aligned with the runway
- Liftoff at the held attitude without a distinct rotation input
Common errors
- Raising the tail abruptly, producing a large gyroscopic yaw the pilot then chases
- Raising the tail too far — an over-flat attitude that hurts crosswind control and delays liftoff
- Leaving forward elevator in as speed builds, so the attitude keeps flattening
- Timid rudder — small inputs that never catch the yaw
- Rudder held after the correction has worked, starting a swerve the other way
- Letting the aileron drift toward neutral in a crosswind and allowing the upwind wing to rise
- Riding the brakes or tapping them during the roll
- Forcing the airplane off at normal takeoff speed in strong gusty wind
