Spin Entry, Incipient Spin, and Recovery
Rehearse the spin sequence and PARE recovery — the CFI spin-training requirement, taught cold before it is ever flown.
Teaching Frame (Brief — Demo — Practice — Debrief)
- Preflight brief on the ground: what, why, how, and the completion standardName the maneuver, tie it to the ACS task and the standard, explain why it matters operationally, then walk the procedure. The student should be able to describe it back before engine start (AIH ch. 5).
- Set the ground rules: positive exchange of controls, three-wayEvery transfer is spoken and acknowledged both ways, with a visual check. Establish it before the first maneuver and hold it all flight (AIH ch. 8).
- Clearing turns and airspace — you are responsible for the whole airplane
- Demo with a running narration — talk the picture, not just the numbersSay what you look at and when: outside references, then the instrument cross-check. The student learns your scan, not only your control inputs.
Setup
- Confirm the airplane is approved for intentional spins in its current configuration and loadingCheck the POH/AFM and the placards, and the weight and balance — utility category and an aft-CG limit usually apply. An airplane approved for spins at one loading is not approved at another.
- Altitude: high enough to recover by a self-imposed floor with margin
- Brief the aerodynamics: autorotation is the two wings at different angles of attackThe stalled inner wing produces less lift and more drag than the less-stalled outer wing, so the airplane rolls and yaws into a descending rotation. A spin is a stall plus yaw — remove either and it stops.
- Clearing turns; harness tight, loose items stowed
Execution
- Entry: power idle, hold altitude as it decelerates, and at the stall apply full rudder in the spin direction“Stall — full rudder”
- Incipient phase — the first turn or two, before the spin stabilizesMost training spins are recovered here. Recognition matters more than the developed spin: this is the phase a student will actually encounter after a botched stall.
- Developed spin: rotation, airspeed, and vertical speed steady
- Recover with PARE — unless the POH says otherwise, and the POH always wins“Power idle — Ailerons neutral — Rudder opposite — Elevator forward”Power idle removes the thrust that flattens the spin. Ailerons neutral — aileron into the spin worsens it. Full opposite rudder stops the yaw. Then brisk forward elevator breaks the stall. Rudder neutral once rotation stops, then recover from the dive without over-stressing the airframe.
Recovery
- Rotation stopped: neutralize rudder, ease out of the dive respecting 105 @ 2,325 lb / 90 @ 1,900 lb and the g limit
- Level off, power up, and check altitude lost against the brief
- Debrief the teaching point: students get here from an uncoordinated stall, so coordination is the prevention
ACS tolerances
- Spin training required for the initial CFI-airplane certificate (61.183(i)) — logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor
- Recovery per the POH/AFM procedure; PARE where the POH gives none
- Recovery complete with an altitude margin above the self-imposed floor
Common errors
- Using aileron during the spin — it can flatten or accelerate the rotation
- Pulling out of the dive too abruptly and over-stressing the airframe
- Neglecting weight, balance, and category limits before an intentional spin
- Teaching the developed spin while skipping recognition of the incipient phase
